Production Log Twelve

This weeks production Log

Overall we completed our short film and received fab feedback from the teacher, I and my partner are really happy with our final product however we would like put in some sound effects and also make the antagonist look a bit more frightening by putting special effects.

During this week we also had concentrate on editing our short film "Antique" on final cut pro.We have completed around about 80% of our editing, this includes the opening of the short film, when she finds out that theirs something wrong with the necklace,When she comes back after throwing the necklace away and the ending scene of a little kid discovering the necklace. There is a small section left to edit which is the scene of me disposing the necklace.Originally we already had the shots of the disposing scene but when looking at the shots I was not satisfied as it was to simple and quite boring to watch.I and my partner decided to re-film these shot and make it more creative.

Re-filming shots

We also have re-filmed a section of our short film, the disposing scene of the necklace. When we first recorded this scene the mise-en-scene was horrendous and also the camera language was not to great. All the shots did not work effectively and did not really connote any meaning towards the scene. It was very unclear. Therefore we re-recorded the scenes in a better location and added more camera language which actually would reflect her emotions in that particular situation.

We wanted to be very creative in this scene and therefore we wanted to add a 360 shot with jump cuts of the protagonist looking confused and scared as to what she will do with the necklace. I got this inspiration from my class students Simran Bhatti and Paman Uppal who created a 360 shot in their British social realism opening sequence "4WALLS".This is shown at 0.09-0.15.This was really effective in their sequence as how they did it and I would like to replicate that specific scene and create in a different way for my short film.

Production Log Eleven

In this bog post I will be writing about my production log

Filming at Portobello road
Editing

During this week we have started to edit our two scenes which we recorded last Saturday at the apartment at streatham hill. Looking thorough all of the footage we have demonstrated well to our examiners as to how well we use the camera and how we both broadened our creativity in filming, This was shown thorough the different shot types or different movements and angles we created. When uploading all of the footage I and my partner started to put everything in its right place and started to trim down and to create an continuity of each different shots. This took several of hours as we wanted every shot to be perfect. When looking at the rough edit of the short film we had a quick overview of the clip and wrote some notes down as to what needed to be improved. Here are some criticism which I and my partner wrote for my short film "some shots are to shaky, the lighting is to bright or to low at times, some shots are really not needed which is wasting time and duration of the short film".

The criticism did not really affect my partner that much as he already  knew that the lighting would be way off at times,my  partner had a plan from the very beginning when creating the short film that he wanted to change the lighting saturation of each shot on after effects so that every lighting of the shot is fairly the same.We also resolved the situation of the shaky movements, after watching it again the shakiness created a more realistic approach to the short film as it creates a more of an  tensed atmosphere,it will be more boring if we used a static shot and it will not create any enigma or emotions towards the audience.Hence the jerky movements will make the audience more interested and involved as they will know that the protagonist is feeling very scared and therefore reflected of the protagonist emotion.

Recreating the institutional logo

New Logo which I created on fireworks

During this week I also recreated the logo as I felt that my partners initial idea for his logo did not really fit the style of our short film.I created the logo in fireworks as I felt more comfortable working on that programme as I  already have some  experience on working on the software. On my logo I created a silhouette of a girl whos holding a dolly and playing around with it,the girl is standing on a throne with leaves on it,This creates enigma as to who the girl is, why shes playing with the doll, and what is the thrones symbolising. All of the enigmatic symbols is therefore reflecting the name of the institutional logo "Enigmatic films productions" and it works effectively towards the audience as its creating mystery.I also created a gradient cone background to create mystery as on side of the logo is dark and the other side is much lighter and whiter.

Old logo
Sound
we needed some sounds effects in our short film and we did approach a website which had free sounds. https://freesound.org/ This is going to be very helpful for us as we do need some sounds to put in the background such as creaking doors, wind noises and even breathing.breathing. These sound effects will make the whole film more realistic and also make the scene more interesting as some of the sounds will intrigue the audience and also scare them at times as it will create an sinisterly atmosphere.

We also going to have Music playing in the background, our teacher recommend us to use a noire opening style sequence for our short film music type. Here is an example we were looking at.

We cant use this YouTube clip as its not free copy right music

Here is a free copyright music that I found on Royalty free music which is called "Fast talking".

If this sound track does not work then we are allowed to create our own soundtrack.

Opening Sequence

For our opening sequence we would like to create a collage of antiques which we took picture for at the market. This will introduces the set of the short film which is a key convention. we would like to do something like this.

Production Log Ten

In this blog post I will be writing about our graphics and filming.

Filming:This scene of me looking at necklace as its not displaying on the phone

On a Saturday me and my partner including cast started to film on a Saturday. We travelled all the way to Streatham hill which was a two hour journey. As we arrived to the location we were very shocked and surprised. We thought that the location was going to be very big and spacious, however it was a very small apartment. It didn't really bother me as I though this will be a challenge for both of us as to how we will work around this situation. I like to take risks and try to conquer the situation and try to prove that I could work around any situation. As a result I did do that as I directed my partner as to what we will do around these small spaces and how I will act the scenes, my partner agreed to my directions as he did not know what to do when we first got there.

The weather was an issue during filming as during mid-day it’s started to rain and the room became darker. My partner kept on complaining about it but I did resolve the problem as my dad gave me a torch which changes the light mode too high to low, This torch helped us a lot during filming and made our lightening better during filming!

This is the exact torch we used for filming which my dad brought for us.

Overall the filming went really well, the positives of the day will have to be the different shot angles we used, the acting, my directing of recreating the scenes and also my partners filming skills. The negatives will have to be the apartment size, and also my partner contribution was lacking at times but at the end we did resolve that and we successfully completed our two scenes.

AND FINALLY...

When we completed all our filming  I and my cast had some cheeky Nando's and wafflemeister to get rid of all the stress!

Image result for nandos chicken burger

It worked successfully!!

Here are some more picture we took on the day

Graphics

Institutional logo

During this week we started to create our institutional logo. The
institutional logo is firstly introduced at the beginning of the short film "Antique".This will be the first thing which the audience will see therefore it will have to be eye-catchy and creative. We created the logo in Photoshop rather then using Adobe fireworks. We believe that Photoshop will create a more polish, clean, professional look towards our final completed film and therefore it will look more effective towards our audience as it will be more eye-catchy to read, rather then using fireworks which will have a more rough look towards it.

We called our institutional logo " Enigmatic Films",as we believe that our short film creates enigma towards our audience ,we have a variety of scenes in our short film which creates enigma,an  example of this is when she throws the necklace away and then she discovers the necklace is in the coffer, this creates enigma as to how the necklace even got their.Another example is when she taking pictures of the antiques and the necklace is not displaying on her iPhone, this then leads to the women on the floor with the necklace in her hand. This creates more enigma as to why the necklace is not showing on her iPhone and who is the women displayed on the phone.,this gives an audience an idea as to there's something wrong with the necklace which is the red herrings in our short film.Thus-we are creating synergy in both the film and the institutional logo as it has the concept of enigma.

We finally completed our institutional logo by putting slight effects towards it.We made this completely by scratch as we vector traced an a image of a reel and created dents to form a wave look towards the reel.

Opening Sequence

For our opening sequence we would like to create an animated opening sequence, we had many ideas as to what we would like to do for example creating a track in a antique shop with titles emerging from the sides which establishes the name of the director, actors and the title. But by doing little research of opening sequences I came across this template which I absolutely adored. I really liked the effects on the image and how they emerged. We could replace the pictures on the footage with antiques which will be taken by us.This footage also has a old fashioned vintage look which will fit perfectly in our short film
We would like to replicate this video and make it our own version.

 Transitions

Here is a animation of a ink drop,We would like to use this ink drop and make it as a transition for each different location we approach. An example of this would be at the beginning when we have her in the antique shop,we will then add the ink drop transition which will introduce the next setting which is her house.I think this will look really effective and it will interests the audience rather then watching a bunch of cuts throughout the short film.

Production Log Nine

During this week I had to focus on the logistic.

During this week I was given a sheet which focused on the logistics when filming our short film. This includes:

  • call sheets: This will help us and our cast to show up on the day of filming
When creating the call sheets we did have a problem as to how the weather would be during that day.We first wanted a sunny day as we both wanted that the audience will not know that the film is going to be based around the genre horror and therefore it will create enigma. But I and my partner did resolve the issue that if its a rainy day this will create pathetically which will be reflected upon the atmosphere and the situation that she will be in later when taking the necklace. This was perfect choice for I and my partner.

  • Production schedule: This  schedule provides us a template of how the days will run during filming, editing and creating the products, this will outline or filming days and times

When creating the production schedule we already had fixed dates on the 14th and 15th of November as I booked the apartment on those days. On the 21st we want to record all the antique scene as on the Saturday their is more access in the market as everything is opened on that day.We are worried that there will be to much of a crowd but at the end of the day we wanted to create a vibrant atmosphere during the opening of the short film, as we wanted audience to be more involved and interested as to what is happening in the scenes. When we both finalised those dates we both realised that during the 9th-11th we are not doing anything. My partner had an idea to create the opening animation sequence and the logo of the short film which will save us alot of time rather then leaving it towards the end. Inaddtion during filming we would also like to take pictures for our magazine review and our poster to save us time rather then going back to our locations and taking pictures.

  • Location recite: This will highlight  our different locations which we will be using on the day of filming. This helped me also as to how I will be using the locations and why I will be using them.

The location recci was easy to create as we knew what type of location we wanted from the very start of planning the short film.my partner and I chose an antique market which is in Portobello Road ,the reason why we chose this was that we wanted the protagonists personality to reflect upon the location. As our protagonist has a hobby of collecting hobbies and taking pictures we would like to highlight that through this location as it has a variety of antiques and funky stuff. We are planning to film on a Saturday as its the main day of shopping antiques plus it will include; Antiques Arcades, antiques stalls between Portobello Road and Kensington Park Road Portobello Green – more new fashion. In addition the market is packed with stalls from Westbourne Grove all the way up to and along Golborne Road, and across under the Westway out to Ladbroke Grove. This will be a perfect day to film as their will be a more of an atmosphere as their will be huge crowds during filming and we will be able to access more stuff on that day as everything is opened on the Saturday. Our second location is the apartment. The reason we are choosing this location is that we want the protagonists personality to reflect upon the house as shes really quirky and different. As our protagonist has a hobby of collecting antiques and taking pictures we would like to highlight that throughout house with quirky furniture and items .We chose a fun, vibrant colourful house which will look really good when film. Inaddtion their are many rooms to film in and its very spacious.Overall our main initial idea is that each location is reflected upon our protagonists persona.

  • casting: This will be highlight the different job roles and casting of our film.It will also include what they are going to do on the day.Overall we already knew who we wanted in our short film as we already chose that I will put myself for acting and also my little sister as we both have a background of acting experiences. I also created a page of what we would be wearing for the short film as it will  help me and my sister as to what look we are going for.

We have completed our logistics and hopefully we could start to film soon as possible!

Production Log Eight

This week I will be writing about my production log of week seven

During this week I've been looking at different locations to film our short movie “Antique". I was given the role during the half term holidays to search for a location to film as we both believed that our houses are not suitable for the short film. I went on the website Air BnB as it affordable and cheap. During my search I did meet really friendly people and some impolite hostesses. Throughout our search of finding a house we listed down a few words as to what we wanted the house to look like, this included, modern, vintage, quirky and colourful. As a result I did find a total of 67 listings however some of the locations were outside of London and also too costly

When I found a location I sent out an enquiry to explain to them what we are doing, this include “Hi I was just browsing the Air BNB website and came across your fabulous home. Would it be possible if I could please film at your home for 2 days on 14th and 15th November? I am currently studying Media Studies at Sixth Form Chadwell Heath Academy and I believe this location will be best to film my horror short movie. The short film consists of a girl who has a hobby of collecting antiques and she comes across a necklace which later possesses her. I can assure you that no items or furniture will be moved in the process of filming the short movie as me and my partner have agreed that we like the layout of your house. During the filming there will be 2 other students this includes a child aged 12. If you would like more information in regards to this I would be willing to answer all questions. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind Regards Sundeep Kaur Panag”. Overall we did get 25 responses with 15 rejections. This was quite a stressful process as some of them lied to us about the locations and also they gave us a fee to record for £100 pounds. At this point I thought that we will not get a location and we will have to film in our houses. This really stressed me out!

However we did receive good news from Nicola,At the end we did make a deal with the air bnb hostess, Nicola. She gave us a wonderful deal to film on the 14-16 of November for £45.Me and my partner were really happy to receive this offer as it is very affordable for both of us. We are also very thankful that she gave this offer as I was struggling to find a perfect location after being rejected many times on the website.

Below is Nicolas house

15 mins from Central London - Flats for Rent

Apartment in London, United Kingdom. This beautiful room is in a home near Streatham Hill station and is ideal for young professionals or people who want a base with great transport links for their London adventures. It's 15 minutes away from Central London and very close to Brixton... View all listings in London
This house is perfect for our short film as its very quirky and modern and therefore this will relate with out protagonists personality.

In addition I also completed the shooting script as I was given the task to complete it.  We were given a shooting script with a minimum of 200 shots as I and my partner are creating a short film. The shooting script took me four days to complete as I wanted every shot to be significant for my film. My main inspiration for this short film was by pony smasher who created lights out, cam close and coffer. I wanted to incorporate these elements in to my short film and to create a unique twist within it. Overall I would say that the script is looking really good but my fear is the timing of each shot as I believe that it might over run more than a minute. If that happens then we will try to create faster shots at the beginning of the short film.

Production Log Seven

In this blog post I will be writing about my production log week Seven.

During this week we decided to change the name of our short film to Antique as we believed that latch was not suitable  to the short film. Antiques more relevant as the short film is mainly based on a  antique for example the necklace.

This week we had to complete our magazine review and our short film poster. With our short film poster we would like to keep it simple and naturalistic. We want to create enigma towards our audience when looking at the poster which will be conventional in short film posters as they don’t reveal too much. The film poster “Antichrist" caught my intention as I really think that this could relate to my short film latch. I really like how it does not expose that much of the narrative as they only use one object within the poster which is the scissors. When creating my poster I could replace the scissors with the necklace and put blood stains or blood drops drizzling down the poster. In addition I really like how they used the double exposer effect of the scissors and replacing it with two heads. We would also like to create synergy keeping the poster colour to red and back as our footage will be displayed as that colour.

For our magazine review we would like to make it quite simple as the film is only 5 minutes long and theirs not that much to talk about. We don’t want to expose too much of the narrative to the audience as it will kill the whole plot of the movie. Therefore we would like to put a whole image on the magazine review of the protagonist looking at the necklace, this therefore this will create enigma and it doesn't really highlight the fact that this short film is based around horror as theirs no horror elements showing on the picture, This will then shock the audience when reading the review as they did not expect a horror short film when looking at the image. We are also going to use the layout of empire magazine as its very conventional.

We also had to complete our treatment for our short film. We were given a Power Point which included everything we had to write in our final treatment. This included logistics, audience, our vision ect. Here is an example for our treatment idea, The target audience for our short film is quite varied, for example the typical audience for a horror film is people who are aged 15-34 years old, as this is where about 77% of the audience is, this is further split up by gender into roughly a 50-50 split, where roughly 55% of people who watch horror films are male within this age group. In terms of where they are located, they are in developed countries; however there isn’t a specific ethnicity that our film is targeted towards. Things that would interest our target audience would be intellectual films or unique/creative film. Therefore we believe that this will be suitable for our target audience. Our characters also a very vital aspect of a short film, we have deliberately chosen a very specific style for our character in terms of mise-en-scene. For example we have chosen a 1960’s style costume for our protagonist to connote that she is old fashioned and out of place in the modern world. Inaddtion I will be playing the role of the protagonist as I am cable to act as I’ve taken drama as a level.

Blog reflection week six

In this blog post im going to write about what I did during this week

during this week I had to complete four blog posts, this included, analysis of three short films , analysis of a magazine review, a poster analysis and an audience portfolio page.

WATCH.OUT.FOR.EVIL
I have been continuing to analyse film posters as we had task to analyse three different posters. Successfully I completed my poster and have gained a lot of inspirations from the different posters that I analysed. One poster which I got inspired by was “Antichrist".
I did some research on the movie as I think that I could add some elements of the film into my own production. The reason as to why I got inspired is that I really like the movies visuals and the different type of camera shots. In addition the movies colour pallet worked really effectively and suited the mood and atmosphere of it.

According to Wikipedia Antichrist is a 2009 experimental horror film written and directed by Lars von Trier, starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. It tells the story of a couple who, after the death of their child, retreat to a cabin in the woods where the man experiences strange visions and the woman manifests increasingly violent sexual behaviour and sadomasochism. The narrative is divided into a prologue, four chapters and an epilogue.

When creating the posterPower Point and trying to find different film posters on Google images. Overall this poster is very simplistic but has so much meaning towards it and therefore I would like to create something as similar to this poster as it will create enigma and suspense towards the audience.

In this week’s task we also had to create a power point on a magazine review and to analyse three shorts films. I used the website issue as it saved time and effort as I did not need to go out and buy the magazines. In addition we created a portfolio page on meet my audience  which outlines what our perfect target audience is going to be, for example agile, the age of the audience, the gender, the audiences interests, the location where they come from and the audiences ethnicity.

Meet My Audience

In this blog post im going to write about my target audience for my short film "latch".
Below is a powerpoint showing my target audience.

Short Film Poster

In this blog post I will be writing about the layout of a film poster.

This will include:

  •  what type of film poster I will be analysing.
  •  How is the poster constructed and why has the institution  selected the design?
  •  what audience is the poster targeting and what is denoted on  the poster to support this?
  •  what messages does the poster connote to the audience about  the film?
  •  Are there any elements of brand synergy carried from this  text into the film?

Below is a powerpoint covering each bullet point and also explaining the different types of conventions in a film poster.

Poster inspirations and ideas:

When creating this Power Point and trying to find different film posters on Google images. The film poster “Antichrist" caught my intention as I really think that this could relate to my short film latch.I really like how it does not expose that much of the narrative as they only use one object within the poster which is the scissors. When creating my poster I could replace the scissors with the necklace and put blood stains or blood drops drizzling down the poster. Magazine review

In this blog post I will be analysing a magazine film review.I will be highlighting the main conventions of a magazine review, for example the title, star rating, stills from the film and so on.

This blog is going to include accompanied paragraphs. This will include:

  • what is being reviewed?
  • who is the review targeting?how do you know?
  • How is the film reviewed?what language is being used?
  • what key information/messages dose the review give to the audience about the film?
  • what ideas might you take from this film review?
